Hello and welcome! I'm Omar Baksh, and I'm thrilled to share a bit about my journey in education and technology. My journwy began in 2016 when I embarked on a new adventure as a middle school teacher. However, prior to stepping into the classroom, my professional background was rooted in the IT field. After graduating with degrees in electro-mechanical and computer engineering, I spent a significant portion of my early career at JHS 22. Starting as an intern, I gradually took on roles as a computer specialist and technology coordinator.
A pivotal moment led me to step away from my role at JHS 22 to complete my degree. However, the call to education was strong, and I found myself drawn back to the school to make a career shift. It was a conscious decision to leave the IT world behind and embrace a new challenge — teaching computer science.
My passion for computer science traces back to my childhood. As a kid, I tinkered with small electronic speakers and various devices, foreshadowing a future where I would share this enthusiasm with students. Today, I channel that same passion into the classroom, inspiring and guiding students as they explore the world of computer science.
Interestingly, I have a profound personal connection to the very neighborhood where I now serve as an educator. I am a proud product of this community, having attended PS 63, JHS 117, and Schools for Excellence—each a distinctive part of the educational landscape within District 9.
Returning to this vibrant area is not just a career choice; it is a journey back to my roots. The hallways and classrooms of PS 63 hold memories of my formative years, and JHS 117 is where I took my first steps towards understanding the intersection of technology and education. The sense of community, diversity, and resilience embedded in the Schools for Excellence ethos shaped my perspective on the transformative power of education.
Investing in the education of students who, like me, are growing up in this very neighborhood, feels like coming full circle. It's an opportunity to contribute to the same educational institutions that played a pivotal role in my own development. This connection goes beyond professional obligations—it's a heartfelt commitment to giving back to the community that nurtured me.
As I walk through the familiar streets and share classrooms with the next generation, I am driven by the belief that every student has the potential for greatness. My journey from student to educator within District 9 is not just a narrative; it's a testament to the enduring impact of quality education in shaping lives.
My teaching philosophy revolves around fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. I believe that education is not just about delivering information but about creating an atmosphere where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
In my classroom, diversity is not just acknowledged; it is celebrated. I actively seek to incorporate a variety of perspectives, experiences, and voices into the learning process. By doing so, I aim to provide a platform for students to connect their unique backgrounds to the vast world of computer science. This inclusivity is not only crucial for cultivating a rich learning experience but also for preparing students to thrive in an interconnected and diverse global landscape.
I am passionate about igniting curiosity and critical thinking in my students. Beyond the standard curriculum, I encourage them to question, explore, and push the boundaries of their understanding. I firmly believe that by nurturing a sense of wonder and intellectual curiosity, students are better equipped to tackle the challenges of the future.
Furthermore, I recognize that the realm of computer science is vast and ever-evolving. As such, my teaching philosophy emphasizes not just the transmission of knowledge but the cultivation of skills that extend beyond the classroom. Through hands-on activities and project-based learning, I empower students to become active participants in their education, preparing them for a future where adaptability and problem-solving are paramount.
There's a unique joy in connecting with students who share a similar background and upbringing. Beyond the traditional classroom setting, I extend my passion for education into afterschool programs. Here, we delve into hands-on projects, community service initiatives, and the development of leadership skills.
In our afterschool sessions, we engage in a variety of enriching activities, from coding and electronics projects to collaborative community service endeavors. This holistic approach to education not only deepens their understanding of computer science but also instills values of teamwork, responsibility, and leadership.
My goal is not only to impart knowledge but to foster a sense of community and personal growth. Through these extracurricular experiences, I aim to empower students not just as learners but as well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Thank you for visiting my tenure portfolio website. I am excited about the continued journey of learning, exploration, and community building with my students.
